Royal March of the Lion, a performance by Every house has a door and Essi Kausalainen, derives from themes of dedication, the symbolism of the Lion as King, and the strange interventions of the antlion insect. This co-devised ensemble performance, directed and choreographed by Lin Hixson, with original writing and dramaturgy by Matthew Goulish, continues the Carnival of the Animals series of modular performances focusing on endangered species and the concept of extinction. With handmade costumes and set design by Finnish artist Essi Kausalainen, live music by Sima Cunningham and performances by Elise Cowin, Kenya ‘KaoRaZen’ Fulton, Bryan Saner, Corey Smith, and special guest young people performers, Elliott Popovic Schuh, Stella Dmytrenko-Hreczuch, and Lorenzo Lago, the intricacies of non-human life provide the foundation of this new work.
This project is partially supported by a CityArts grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
